To most, the look of the PDR-C is reminiscent of the P90, mostly due to the compact shape of the grip. However, the PDR uses M4 or STANAG magazines, making it more versatile than the P90 (not to mention magazines are easier to buy and easier to carry). Externally, the Magpul PDR is a simple design. An upper picatinny rail allows for attachment of optics. A button just below the scope rail switches the replica shell ejection port from right to left.

The controls are limited to the ambidextrous magazine release button and the safety trigger. The forward location of the magazine release makes magazine swaps fast and simple. There is no manual safety, and the trigger is a two stage design. One click for semi-auto, fully depressed for full-auto.

Construction of the PDR-C is quote robust. Magpul PTS uses a high quality polymer which will resist most scratches and impact, and doesn’t feel like it’ll give at all. Even though the gun is not too heavy, the realistic weight is reassuring. The texturing on the grip provides adequate control, and the rifle has a matte finish. The PTS PDR-C trademarks are molded into the rear of the receiver, and are unobtrusive, with a simple metal plate holding the serial number.

Internally, the PDR-C is well made and intelligently designed. The trigger and magazine release each use a single transfer bar to actuate their respective components. The magazine release is a simple ambidextrous design. At the gearbox, it’s apparent that Magpul PTS took their time to develop a streamlined and reliable system. Unlike other two-stage triggers, the PDR trigger uses a single switch. The trigger bar itself engages the switch and moves the selector plate, and re-engages the switch when the trigger is fully pressed.

The gearbox is a unique design, but uses a number of standard parts, including the gearset, piston, piston head, cylinder,  and spring. The cylinder head and air nozzle are unique, as well as a couple of the other components. Magpul PTS has made the most of their available space, though, and the gun runs quite well. 8mm bearings provide smooth operation, and all the drivetrain components help up well even on an 11.1v battery.

In our test, the PDR-C chronographed 370-380 FPS with a .20g BB. The trigger response was very crisp, but that’s something we expect with an 11.1v lipo battery.  Range was good, even using .20s. However, heavier ammo would improve range and accuracy. The hop up, which is accessed through a removable cheek piece, works well. It is a little hard to reach because it is recessed in the body, but it is doable in the field.

Everyone who test fired the PDR liked the heft and the sleek design. The ultra-short length makes close cornering simple; it’s far less bulky than an M4 with the same length barrel. However, some people find that the grip is a little to short to be comfortable. Much like a compact handgun, shooters with larger hands found that their pinky had nowhere to rest.

Overall, it’s a fantastic airsoft rifle design suitable for a number of applications. With a low power spring and the quick change spring guide, the PDR-C will excel in CQB or arena use. No other weapon is as compact, sturdy, and maneuverable. With a quick spring upgrade, it’s a capable field weapon as well. While it’s not fancy, Magpul PTS has realized that there’s a reliability in simplicity. If you’re looking for something that works, check out the Magpul PTS PDR-C airsoft rifle.

Elite Force has one of the airsoft world’s best warranties, with a 1 year manufacturer warranty on a number of their products. Elite Force has also done an excellent job of sourcing quality OEM factories to produce their airsoft guns. The two new models on display will be part of the HK line, and comprise a standard HK  MP5A4 and a modernized HK MP5A5. These AEGs are made by VFC feature full metal construction. Additionally, as seen on the receiver, both these MP5s have a three round burst setting, using a 4 position fire selector.

The build quality on the HK MP5s by VFC is solid, with tight assembly and minimal wobble even on the telescoping stock. At this point availability has not been nailed down, but they are on the way. Elite Force has been fairly prompt with their new releases, so I would expect to see it this year.

Another Elite Force airsoft gun on the way is an HK UMP. While the HK UMP Competition AEG is available now, the new Elite Force UMP by VFC will be a high end model with improved build quality and performance. These should retail in the mid $200 price range, making them quite affordable for a premium AEG.

In the Umarex Competition Series, two more AEGs are being added. An HK MP5A4 and an MP5K. These will likely be about the same price point as the other Competition airsoft guns, which are $166 with the battery and charger included. Considering the quality of the other HK Competition AEGs, the MP5K could be an excellent option for those looking for a compact airsoft gun.

Additionally, Umarex is adding a Red Jacket Airsoft product line. These are OEM by SRC, so they will be affordable with decent quality. Each model includes Red Jacket Firearms markings, either in the naming or the logo. Umarex is also planning on distributing a TAR-21 model with a slightly longer barrel for those who like the extended barrel length.

KWA’s press release confirmed that they will be making both Gas Blowback and AEG model LWRC airsoft guns. The AEG version will use KWA’s proven 2GX gearbox, while the GBB version will use the Force Velocity system proven in the LM4 series.

LWRC’s vice president of business development stated that “LWRC proudly announces our new collaboration with KWA.” He went on to say that they expect to produce replicas of the LWRC M6 IC, the PSD, and the famed LWRC REPR. The REPR is a 7.62×5, or .308 chambered precision rifle, which will be a standout model in the airsoft market.

The proven performance and reliability out of both the 2GX gearbox and the LM4 Force Velocity system will make a fantastic series of airsoft rifles, not only for milsim use, but also for professional and civilian training alike.

The MOE AK Grip is essentially a basic MOE type pistol grip designed to replace an original AK or clone grip. The larger size will fit many shooters better, and while the pictured model is smooth, the final production version will feature full texturing. Another grip that Magpul announced was the MOE K2 grip. Like the MOE K PDW grip, the K2 grip uses a steeper grip angle for improved comfort when shooting in a compressed stance. However, the K2 grip uses the familiar MOE size and width when compared to the very slim MOE K grip.

Another unexpected release was the arrival of the MOE Fixed Stock. Unlike the MOE Rifle Stock, which fits on a rifle buffer, the MOE Fixed Stock is designed to fit onto a standard carbine buffer tube, while providing fixed stock stability. The stock features integral QD sling mount sockets, but is also compatible with the ASAP for a receiver sling mount, if desired. Since the stock installs with no gunsmithing, it is an easy install for most shooters.

Magpul has also updated their sling offerings with the MS4, or Multi Mission Sling System 4. This retains the in-house constructed hardware and the wider, more robust material of the MS3, but changes the snap hook for a QD socket. The convertible plate has dual QD mounts so it can be reconfigured to single point use from either side. If QD sockets are your thing (like if you’ve been to a Vicker’s Carbine Class) then don’t miss out on using the MS4 with the Magpul RSA QD.

The XTM Hand Stop Kit and XTM Enhanced Rail Panels were announced a while ago, but are finally shipping. The Magpul Hand Stop Kit includes two hand stop sizes, one taller and one shorter. These can be configured individually, front or rear, in any manner that suits the user. The XTM Enhanced Rail Covers feature aggressive texturing when compared to the originals; the same texturing is found on the hand stop panels.

Magpul also released their shotgun accessories for the Mossberg 500/590 series shotguns. This will allow Mossberg owners to equip their shotguns as desired. The MOE shotgun forend is compatible with all MOE accessories, include the light mount kit or scout light mount.

Finally, while most users are aware of the PMAG M3, Magpul also decided to update their .308 magazines into the new PMAG style. The PMAG LR M3 Magazines updates the 7.62×51 rifle magazines into the Gen3 or M3 PMAG. Available in 25, 20, and 10 round configurations, these are compatible with a number of AR10 or SR25 type rifles.

The highlight of Condor’s new Made in the USA series is their Cyclone Plate Carrier. While there are a lot of MOLLE plate carriers on the market, the Cyclone is designed to be lightweight and affordable, while still being made in the US. The front and rear plate pockets will fit up to a 10 1/4″ x 13 1/4″ plate. The pockets are wider at the top to accommodate any shape armor plate, instead of being limited to shooter’s cut plates. Inside the plate pocket the Cyclone features internal retention slots to keep armor in place, no matter which size or cut is used.

At 1 pound 10 ounces, the Condor Cyclone is 10 to 15 ounces lighter than competing plate carriers, even with the cummerbund. The cummerbund will accept side plates, but can be removed for an even lighter, low profile kit. Two columns of PALS webbing are stitched onto the shoulder strap for improved mounting options, if desired. Additionally, Condor is using woven Multicam webbing instead of printed webbing. This is far more resistant to fading than printed webbing, and provides a durable PALS mounting platform while maintaining full Multicam patterning.

Condor is also spooling up production of MOLLE Pouches which will be Made in USA. These pouches will roll out as they are available. This line will provide individuals looking for quality gear at an affordable price an option for tactical equipment which is US made.

You don’t have to wait for the US made line to see new items from Condor, though. A number of new tactical gear products are available for immediate release.

The Exo Plate Carrier is an updated armor vest design. Like older versions, the Exo Plate Carrier will accommodate both soft ballistic panels and hard armor plates. A slimmer front panel provides improved ride and comfort, while two available sizes makes for a better fit overall. Again, this MOLLE plate carrier features two columns of PALS webbing on the shoulders, but also adds velcro loops for hydration hose keepers or radio wire guides. The rear panel also includes an integral pocket which can be used to carry a hydration bladder.

The Oasis Hydration Carrier presents a new option for hydration solutions. The Oasis carrier uses a slim stitched profile with essentially no width to present a lower overall profile, even when fully loaded. Internal insulation keeps water or other fluids cool longer. The Oasis Hydration Carrier can be MOLLE mounted or worn standalone. Its sister pack, the Hydro Harness, is the same carrier style, but designed to integrate with the MCR series chest rigs. This replaces the original shoulder strap and waist belt, and is compatible with the Ops Chest Rig, Recon Chest Rig, Rapid Assault Chest Rig, and other models. It fits the current MCR3, MCR4, MCR5, MCR6, and upcoming MCR7. The contoured padded shoulder panels are ideal for comfort, providing a new level of customizable kit for any scenario.

Speaking of the MCR7, the Ronin Chest Rig is another offering in the MOLLE Chest Rig line. This vest uses a padded H harness, and departs from the common side entry vest by featuring a front buckle system. This provides for much easier donning and doffing, and also gives the vest a much lower front profile. The MCR7 is ideal for snipers or spotters who want a vest that is more comfortable when prone or crawling.

Not one to go light on the new offerings, Condor is also releasing a slew of new smaller items. Two velcro backed utility pouches, one with a mesh front and one with a clear vinyl window, are ideal for storage and customizing pack and gun bag internals. The Condor Lens Pouch is hard sided to protect camera lenses or other sensitive items. The 4×4 utility pouch is a basic MOLLE pouch for gear, but compact to take up less space. The Side Plate Pouch is a MOLLE Side SAPI Plate Carrier. This will fit onto any vest that doesn’t include side pouches to offer improved protection. Condor’s Colossus Duffel Bag is a huge gear bag, while their upcoming Bison backpack and Amphi travel pack offer new gear options.

Condor also had a few products at the SHOT Show booth that aren’t listed on their website yet. These include a low profile drop leg panel with a swivel support for increased mobility, as well as an M4 Magazine Shingle which can be mounted vertically or horizontally.

Condor’s new Synchro tactical gloves are made to work with touchscreen devices. Condor tested their gloves for precision and function, and made sure they would work with every app possible. Some other gloves don’t provide quite the sensitivity needed to function with some apps. Condor also redesigned the fingertip to provide improved control. As demonstrated at the SHOT Show, it’s easy enough to type on an iPhone keypad accurately, and the gloves are comfortable to boot.

The Condor staff also showed me a preview of some projects they’re working on down the road. One of them is a laser cut MOLLE system. The test chest rig has been durability tested and is extremely rugged. Condor’s goal for this design is to produce a chest rig with padded shoulders and an integral map pocket which will weigh less than 1 pound.

Action Sport Games just recently moved into their US distribution center, and is expecting to be shipping within a month or so. Airsoft Outlet NW is excited to be carrying a number of new items, which should be available soon.

Number one among the prominent names is Brugger & Thomet, or B&T. ASG’s current B&T lineup includes a fully licensed MP9, as well as the MP9 QD suppressor. The MP9 models are OEM by KWA, and feature the proven NS2 gas system. The B&T MP9s add fully licensed trademarks to the receiver. The QD suppressor is specifically designed for the MP9, and will also fit the KWA KMP9. This allows for direct attachment to the SMG without a threaded barrel adapter. The MP9 suppressor includes an additional picatinny rail segment for attachment of a light or laser.

The B&T selection also covers a set of full metal, licensed mock suppressors, or barrel extensions. The B&T ROTEX – III and ROTEX III C are aluminum mock suppressors with QD mounts.  These are designed to mount to a standard A2 flash hider, and include a -14mm flash hider for guaranteed mounting compatibility on any AEG. The original ROTEX series silencers are designed for M4 or M16 and SIG 552 or 551 rifles, while the replica barrel extensions are suitable for almost any AEG or GBB.

Another widely recognized name in ASG’s licensed arsenal is LMT, or Lewis Machine & Tool. One AEG with LMT markings, the LMT Defender RIS, is OEM by KWA. ASG’s international LMT line includes a full slate of KWA made airsoft guns. One of these is the LMT Defender4 S.I.R., which features the A.R.M.S. Selective Integrated Rail.

The most unique item in the LMT series is their GL-06 standalone grenade launcher, as well as the LMT M203 models. For those looking for versatile firepower, the GL-06 is a grenade launcher pistol with an upper optics rail and a lower accessory rail for a grip. Or, for the certifiably crazy, attach an LMT M203 to your GL-06 and go to town.

In sniper rifles, ASG has the new ASW338LM, licensed by Ashbury Precision Ordnance. This sniper rifle system features a carbon fiber handguard with an uninterupped optics rail and a set of picatinny accessory rails. The AW338LM will be available as a spring rifle, and may have an optional gas conversion system. The rifle is feature packed, with a QD mock suppressor and folding, fully adjustable stock which includes a monopod.

The rest of the sniper rifle lineup includes Accuracy International models, which are renowned for accuracy and versatility.

The GK5C is styled after the Swedish AK5C. This rifle design is based on the FNC, but adds a number of unique, modern features to a proven platform. The folding stock features a solid locking design, but also adds an adjustable length of pull. Pressing the release at the toe of the stock unlatches the adjustable portion, and pressing the latch lever back into place locks it on the base. The GK5C has an ambidextrous fire selector, but uses a standard one-side magazine release. The receiver rail is integral, which means no adapter is required to mount any optics. One of the other well designed features is the handguard and rail design. The rifle includes rail covers, which, when installed, fit flush with the handguard material. Removing the rail covers exposes a short picatinny rail section on each side of the rifle, with a full length lower rail.

G&G just released the GK5C, but it should be available shortly. Price is expected to be about $400, which is similar to the other high end G&G airsoft AEGs. G&G did confirm that they will develop a shorter version of the GK5C called the GK5D. However, this will probably not be released until next year.

Another one of G&G’s new releases this year is their M1 Garand replica. This rifle is an authentic AEG that accurately replicates the M1 Garand battle rifle. Full metal and real wood construction lend the G&G M1 the heft and feel of a real one. G&G purposefully left the finish somewhat raw, in what they term ‘service grade’ or ‘rack grade’. This matches what the original finish would have been, instead of just going with a modern laminated or smooth finish material. The display model at the booth was wrapped in a shroud around the receiver and action which was labeled ‘Top Secret’. G&G is not revealing their magazine or action until the IWA show in Germany, which is when the rifle will be released. Even the staff at the booth had not seen under the wrap. Speculation is that it may sport an internal magazine which would need to be loaded with the bolt locked back. No confirmation yet on whether the rifle ‘pings’ when the magazine is empty.

The G&G M1 Garand will be shipping to distributors in May, which means we’ll likely have it in US stores early in April. Expected retail price is between $400 and $450.

In accessory news, G&G had demo models of their new optics at the SHOT Show booth. Two electronic holosight models will be available within the next month or so. G&G lists them as the 551 and the 556 holosight. The 556 is similar to the Element XPS model electronic sight, with a transverse (or sideways) mounted CR123 battery. Expected price is $80 for the 551 and $90 for the 556.

Additionally, G&G is also going to be carrying a modern 1x / 4x optic. This scope will mount with dual QD throw levers. The body of the scope includes a rudimentary set of back up iron sights, but the main focus is the zoom function. A quick throw of the side mounted adjustment lever immediately snaps the scope from 4x zoom to 1x for close quarters, and back again for extended engagements. This makes it an ideal all purpose optic. It fills needs in both CQB and long range, and is less bulky and simpler than a magnifier and red dot combo. This scope will likely retail for about $200. No confirmation on whether tan will be available, but it hasn’t been ruled out.

In the past few months, KWA has been racing to get the long awaited KRISS Vector Gas Blowback SMG to retailers’ shelves. They did make their Christmas deadline, but there are a number of other existing projects that are still in production. As KWA continues to release product, they’ll work on expanding their product line. At this show, KWA was demonstrating the newly released KRISS Vector, but they did have one new model to announce.

The KWA Sphinx SDP Compact pistol is part of a continued collaboration with KWA and the company that produces the KRISS. Since the KRISS and Sphinx are produced by the same organization, KWA was tasked with producing a realistic training platform for each model. Last year’s Vector will be accompanied by the upcoming KWA Sphinx. The real Sphinx is based on the CZ type design with the slide riding inside the rails on the frame. One of the most standout features of the Sphinx pistol is it’s adaptability to user design requirements. There are three main components: the Slide, the Upper Frame, and the Lower Frame. Each component can be built to any material specifications. Users needing a lightweight handgun can spec a polymer lower frame with an aluminum upper frame. Those needing a more durable pistol can move up to steel in the upper frame, and even lower frame, if desired.

KWA’s Sphinx SDP GBB pistol uses an aluminum slide and upper frame with the polymer lower frame. This makes for a gas blowback airsoft gun that feels almost exactly like the real one. The SA/DA design features an ambidextrous decocker, which will allow for safe carry, and will transition to single action after the first shot. The frame’s picatinny rail provides room for longer weapon lights, even though the handgun is not extremely long. An M3 or Surefire X300 will mount cleanly.

The grip features a rubberized overmold for imrpoved control and retention. While some regard the look as extreme, the Sphinx is one of the most robust handguns on the market. With a metal slide and frame, even the KWA Sphinx GBB is physically tough, combining KWA’s PTP performance with rugged design cues.

Although KWA did not have the rest of their upcoming lineup on display, they were able to confirm some things as regards to new releases.

• The AKG series will be the next rifle in line. The gas blowback AK74 models will be released before the RM4
• The RM4 is still on the way. Currently the DMR includes an MOE Rifle stock and a 20 inch barrel. The Scout has been modified to a 14.5 inch barrel with a midlength gas system and handguard.
• The M1911A1 is one of the next pistols coming down the pipe.
• The ATP Auto is also one of the top pistol projects for upcoming release
• The M945 Compact and the MKV are queued for release after the other mentioned handgun models.

With any of KWA’s new airsoft guns, the exact or even estimated dates are not predicted. They’ll come when the factory finishes packing the boxes up, but until then all we can do is wait. Prices are also not set in stone, as they usually don’t set final pricing until the items have finished their initial production run. While you’re waiting, though, ask yourself this: When was the last time KWA released a product that had any chronic issues in the initial release? KWA does take their sweet ever loving time releasing new products, but the products they bring to market are brutally tested, revised, hashed, and refined. This means that, as soon as an item is released, the first models into users’ hands are high performance, reliable airsoft replicas. Whether it’s for training use or milsim purposes, KWA makes some of the best airsoft guns for any application, and you can own one. You just have to wait.

The first thing Spartan Imports showed me was a new Smith & Wesson M&P 9mm Compact airsoft pistol. This is fully licensed, and bears the complete S&W trademarks. A metal slide and barrel give this GBB replica a nice feel, especially in conjunction with M&P ergonomics. A lot of people have been looking for a compact or subcompact gas blowback airsoft pistol for use in concealed carry training. This pistol is ideal for that, as it’s size is fairly similar to a number of compact handguns, and the realistic function facilitates accurate training.

The M&P 9mm airsoft gun is made by VFC using Tokyo Marui design cues in elements like the valves, loading nozzle, and hop-up chamber. Price point is expected to be about $130-$140.

On the other end of the GBB spectrum is the Inokatsu steel Colt M1911A1. This airsoft pistol is made entirely out of steel, and is as close to a real handgun as they come. Hard recoil and realistic weight and feel make this a serious collectors’ piece. At a price of over $900, these aren’t for everyone. The guy looking for an ultra-realistic, beautifully manufactured steel 1911 airsoft pistol, though, will find everything he wants in this model.

Another interesting point from Spartan Imports is the announcement that they will be distributing G&P AEGs. Currently, 3 models are already on their way. The G&P CAR-15 XM607, the G&P M16 Commando or CAR-15, and the G&P M16A1. All three are Vietnam era models, and each one features meticulous attention to detail. Licensed Colt trademarks adorn each receiver, with points like the A1 sights and forward assist giving each airsoft gun an authentic look. These will run normal G&P prices, and should make period airsoft milsim events a lot more fun and accessible.

For those that are going in harms way, or those that are training for high risk scenarios, Revision Eyewear is a fantastic choice. Robust construction with clear vision means that you can see in any environment, no matter what gets thrown at you. But as an airsoft or milsim player, why would you want premium eye protection? If all we cared about was protection, an aluminum plate would work great, but you’ve got to be able to see clearly to respond to threats rapidly. If the opponent sees you first, he’s already one step up in the fight.

When it comes to clarity and precision, Revision Military has you covered. Interchangeable lenses allow you to adapt to any environment, with solar (or dark) lenses for bright or harsh sunlight, yellow or vermillion lenses for cloudy or overcast days, and clear lenses for night and indoors. Every set of Revision eyewear is compatible with interchangeable lenses. The Military Desert Locust and Sawfly kits include two lenses each, while the Sawfly Shooter’s Kit includes 3 color lenses.

One thing a lot of users battle is fog. To reduce fog, every set of Revision glasses or goggles are coated with anti-fog coating, as well as anti-scratch protection. Additionally, the Desert Locust Goggles are available with a fan to promote airflow and venting.  For those who want the ultimate in fog-free vision, there’s the Desert Locust Extreme Weather System, which has dual pane thermal lenses, ideal for applications in cold environments.

Because Revision Military eyewear systems are in use by militaries around the world, their designs have been refined for ultimate ease of use and compatibility with tactical gear. Extras like the stealth sleeve, which protects goggles when stored, included anti-fog cloth for an additional layer of fog protection, and one hand strap release as found on the Revision Exoshield make every set of Revision glasses a great value. These designs work, so you don’t have to spend your time and attention messing with something that won’t quite work right.

When it comes down to it, you only have one set of eyes. Not all eyepro is created equal, and taking a risk to save $20 can cost a lot more in the end, especially if your eye protection fails when you need it most. Whether you’re in the Military (Let’s face it, you probably already have a set), Law Enforcement, civilian security or shooting enthusiast, or milsim player, eye protection is something you want to get and forget, until the day you need it.
