Magpul PTS PDR-C Review

Magpul_PTS_PDR-C_Airsoft_GunThe Magpul PTS PDR-C is one of the hottest topics in airsoft. When it first was unveiled by PTS at the SHOT Show, airsofters immediately started asking for it, saving for the day it would finally come out. It took Magpul PTS over two years, but the airsoft version of the PDR is finally available.

To most, the look of the PDR-C is reminiscent of the P90, mostly due to the compact shape of the grip. However, the PDR uses M4 or STANAG magazines, making it more versatile than the P90 (not to mention magazines are easier to buy and easier to carry). Externally, the Magpul PDR is a simple design. An upper picatinny rail allows for attachment of optics. A button just below the scope rail switches the replica shell ejection port from right to left. Read more

When Tactical Is Practical: Guide to Tac Vests Pt. 2

This is Part Two of a series on choosing a tactical vest. Want to review Part One?

What is your role on the field?

Indoor CQC Vest setup with Condor Modular Operator Plate CarrierMost players take on the role of a rifleman carrying an AEG of some kind as a primary weapon and a pistol as a secondary. However, if you carry a bolt action sniper rifle, high-powered semi-automatic marksman rifle, or a support weapon like an M249 or an M240, you may have some pretty specific requirements. The role of Sniper or Marksman favors concealment and mobility. Lightweight chest rigs like the condor RRV or even a pre-configured vest like the condor Recon chest rig paired with a hydration backpack offer a great lightweight low profile solution. For support weapons specialists, the number of items actually carried becomes minimal. Carrying around extra box magazines isn’t very practical so loose ammunition is ideal here. Your weapon system easily weighs two or three times as much as the average AEG, so carrying more weight isn’t an attractive option. You may consider some SVS body armor for protection, and wear something small like the condor OPS chest rig over it to give you some space for a few pistol magazines, a radio, and an ammo pouch. If you feel like you could use a little extra MOLLE a battle belt and an H-Harness just might do the trick.

Tactical Gear on a Budget

Pre-configured tactical vests are available starting at $33.00 for the Condor Chest Rig. MOLLE systems start at $25.00 for the Condor Modular Chest Panel without pouches. If there is a pre-configured vest that suits your needs, it’s certainly a little easier on the wallet. However, if you have multiple weapons systems, buying a single MOLLE vest and several sets of pouches to match each load out can be cheaper than buying a different vest for each weapon.

Condor produces a couple of more versatile options that bridge the gap between a full MOLLE vest and a tactical vest. The Condor Recon Chest Rig and the Condor Rapid Assault Chest Rig both feature a number of built-in pouches, but also feature sections of MOLLE for customization. These can be good compromises in cost while maintaining future modularity.

Considering all of the factors mentioned above, here are a few staff recommendations: Read more

Magpul PTS PDR and New Updcoming Products

The airsoft world has been waiting for the Magpul PTS PDR for years. With a completed prototype at SHOT Show 2012, we hoped it would be available this year. Players have dreamed of getting their hands on them, and some people have even folded $100 bills into origami guns to make sure they could buy it the day it was released. We got extremely close back in August, but the Magpul PTS research team found something they didn’t like in the design and had to rework some elements, delaying the release of the PDR.

Fortunately for the meantime, Magpul PTS has been working on a flurry of licensing agreements, and has lined up a number of other products for us to drool over. I contacted Magpul PTS, and while they couldn’t give me a Magpul PDR AEG update, they did confirm a couple of other really interesting tidbits. Read more

NSWC MK18 Mod1 – What is a Mk18 Anyway?

The Mk18 is most well known as the carbine used by Navy SEALs, though it has also been used by a number of other units and branches. Anyone who is a fan of Navy SEALs, or even a fan of military weapons in general, probably has heard of and/or seen a Mk18. But what is a Mk18, and what if I want to make a real rifle or replica rifle that matches what the SEALs use? Read on to find out what actually defines a Mk18, and what they actually look like in use.

The Mk18 grew out of the SOPMOD Block II project, and eventually became a standalone weapon system. Originally labeled the CQBR, or Close Quarters Battle Receiver, the idea was to equip shooters with a shorter barreled upper receiver to use with their existing lower receiver for use in close quarters. Naval Surface Warfare Center – Crane picked up the concept and claimed it as their own. They then developed it into a complete rifle which would be configured specifically for reliability with the short barrel. This rifle was dubbed Mk18 Mod0. Read more

Magpul PTS PDR and AR-10 News Update

While there were many cool products at the SHOT Show, the highly-anticipated Magpul PTS PDR stole the spotlight.

Highly-anticipated automatic electric Airsoft gun Magpul PTS PDR will be released late this summer.

Unlike some companies that push a product out and then fix small issues later, Magpul PTS is working hard to release a refined, reliable product on the first release. Although this creates a refined product, Airsofters everywhere anxiously await the release of this automatic electric gun. Even with the extra development time, the Magpul PTS PDR is still on time for a scheduled release late this summer. This is great news for players that are rabidly anticipating the PDR, since it should be available soon. Read more
